DigDeep Water Project

DigDeep Water Project

It is a pleasure to write to you on this day. My name is Kailey Skye James, and I am an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation. I would like to bring awareness to something close to my heart, the water injustices currently occuring on the Navajo Nation. Did you know 1-in-3 people on the Navajo Reservation are currently living without water?  DigDeep discovered this, and is now doing God’s work to close the water gap in America. Big thanks to DigDeep for the essential work they are doing on the reservation with the Navajo Water Project, as well as the Appalachia and Colonias collectively. I strongly admire how DigDeep began their operation on the Navajo Nation and continues to expand on its ambition to bring clean water to all Americans.

Twenty years ago I visited my grandma’s childhood home on the reservation for my cousin’s kinaaldá ceremony. The lifestyle of our family was intriguing being nestled among the red sandstone cliffs raising sheep, the comradery of preparing a meal, tailgate rides for sport, and spending time together. While the scenery was exceptional, the living conditions were antiquated. I experienced the water situation firsthand as my family was one of the 30% that did not have access to running water. They took this challenge in strides boiling water for baths and implementing a dishwashing system that consisted of filling both sides of an unplumbed sink with water and soap (one my grandma still uses to this day in Salt Lake City). This year my family was the lucky recipient of a DigDeep home water system in the same house my grandma Dorothea grew up in. The same home I visited all those years ago.
